Will's favorite meal

by Allison Franklin
For about the past year when it's Will's turn to pick what he wants for dinner he always says Mexican flat bread! It has become a regular around here thanks to Pioneer Woman. She posts it under her 20 minute meals but as usual, I move slower than most human beings and it takes me closer to 30. Simple and easy!Grands Home style biscuitsrefried beans 1.5 lbs. of hamburger meat taco seasoningred enchilada saucegrated cheeseonionscilantrosalsa limeRoll out your biscuits to a flat round circle and place on a cookie sheet. Pantry Perge

by Sarah Clark
Our food in the house has been in desperate need of a clean out.   I don't like to waste food, but I never like this job.  It means we have to eat weird food until there is room for new, yummy things that go together.  Last week we dove in and cleaned out that pantry and fridge.  We ate up all the random things like instant pudding and jello boxes and old popcorn.  The rule for snacks was "If you see it, you can eat it."  Honestly it took discipline on my part not to just throw in the towel and go to the grocery store....

Pickle Project

by Kenna Sluder
I have never canned anything before because frankly, I was intimidated by the idea.  This week a friend and I were talking about her growing her own garden for the first time and she sent me this recipe they've use for the cucumbers and okra they've picked.  I figure we're going to give it a shot because my kids love a project and pickles! She promised it's easy and yummy!Mom's Sun Dill Pickles (or okra)Make a mixture of:3 quarts water1 quart vinegar, 5% acidity3/4 cup pickling salt1 heaping tsp. cream of tarterBring above to a boil.  Boil...

Breakfast Ideas?

by Amy Thoennes
The countdown has begun. School days are soon to arrive. We will have to raise our little ratted hair loves out of their summer slumber to the daily grind of crayons, cafeterias and schoolmates. Breakfast has been a driving force for me since the beginning of my Mom days. My boys seem to rise like baby birds squacking at their height, "Give me food...NOW!"And now there is even more pressure when sending them off, their little bodies in need of brain food and energy sustainers. Breakfast! What shall it be? Nutritional. Fast. Crowd Pleasing. These...

My Favorite Marinades

by Amy Spears
During the summer I find I like to grill my meats and in winter I roast them. These two marinades are our absolute favorites that I enjoy during summer and they carry over to the cooler months as well.  Firecracker Grilled Salmon This is from Megan's mom, Mary Grace. It's so tasty on salmon.  We also use it for steak and chicken, too.  4 (4-6 oz) salmon steaks or fillets- I've also used one long fillet too.  1/4 cup oil 2 Tbsp. Soy sauce 2 Tbsp. Balsamic vinegar 2 Tbsp. Chopped green onion 1 1/2 tsp brown sugar 1 clove...

Jicima Cole Slaw

by Sarah Clark
If you tried the black bean and corn salsa, you will love this slaw .  The dressing is very similar.  I love the crunchy seeds and sweet, tangy dressing.  Yum, yum, yum!    JIcima is the stuff in the produce section that looks like a giant onion potato.  Onion shape, potato color and texture.  By itself, jicima tastes like a juicy white potato that is a little sweet.  Its earthy flavor and texture absorbs the sweet tanginess of the dressing.  Serve this slaw with pulled pork and ribs.  It is more...

Mom tip of the Week

I just recently caught up with the times by getting an Iphone. Yes call me old fashioned but I just didn't want something to tie me down. Well it's proven me wrong by actually helping me as long as I don't spend too much time on the social media and ignore my family. Still finding that balance! I recently made the New Year's Resolution to read my Bible all the way through. Well with a baby in one hand for most of the day, I only have one hand to read. And as many people know, it takes two hands to read a book, at least for me it does. So my lovely Iphone came to mind. I downloaded the YouVersion app. It has the Bible, reading plans, a place to take notes, and it will even read to you. The cool part, I can use one hand to read and one hand to hold my baby. ~Misty MaGouirk
